Trying to run the Crucial system scanner on my HP laptop with Vista Ultimate. Have already run the scanner successfully with several Win XP machines. After downloading, I select 'run' and get a DOS screen telling me that "Windows has shut down to avoid damage" with the following string afterwards: WINDOWS_IRQL_NOT_LESS_BUT_EQUAL

What gives?

I had the same problem, only worse. When I ran the scanner on my Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine, I got a BSOD with the information that the kernel had been corrupted. It effectively destroyed the OS. I had to do repairs. It took me nearly an hour to recover my system. This is a serious problem and users should be warned by Crucial about this! Let the user beware!

Are either of you using the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 8, and are both of you using a 64-bit version of Vista SP1?

I just had a similar problem of my other computer (64-bit Vista SP1 Home Premium), but trying to bring up http://www.crucial.com/ under the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 8 (or was it trying to run the System Scanner program after downloading it under IE8? I don't remember) crashed the whole operating system. No sign of any corruption of the disk files, though.

I apologize for the problems you have had with the scanner. I have passed all of your feedback on to the webteam and they are addressing this issue now.

We have requested a 64-bit version of the scanner and it is being worked on, but at this time we unfortunately don't have an ETA for the finished product. As soon as we have an update we will post it here on the forum.

This inteneded as an addtion those experiecing issues with the system scanner and the Win7 RC( 64 bit). I did read the announcement posed by the moderator explaining that the issue has been addressed, however, I too experienced BSOD's on two machines today, 6.13.09, which are otherwise completely stable. This is disappointing as I have relied upon and recommended Crucial for years. Thanks.

Carl

Thank you for mentioning this. We have been testing the scanner again, but we are unable to duplicate the crashes you're seeing on the 64-bit machines in our lab. Any additional information you can give us would be helpful. Which browsers are you using, and does the problem happen both in Vista and Windows 7?

Also, just to make sure we have covered everything, please double-check that you deleted the old scanner file from your system and downloaded the most recent one.

Thank you again for any additional info you can give us. I will pass everything you post on to the scanner team.

Forgot to mention (in response to the Moderator's questions)

1. I do not think it is an old version of scanner, bought the home pc yesterday and installed scanner

06/23/2009 09:31 AM 223,368 CrucialScan.exe

2. The browser version may not be the culprit: for example both using ie8 for the launch, or taking the browser out of the picture completely and just launching CrucialScan.exe from the \users\chris\Downloads directory bsods both pcs (home vista64 home premium or work vista64 enterprise).

Any way I can be of help debugging this?

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks Chris! Every bit of information helps us, so if you have access to the msinfo data for the other systems as well, it would be very helpful to have. It will help us determine what the systems have in common, and how they are different from our test systems. I will send what you have posted in this thread to our scanner team to help them research this further, and I will continue to pass along additional information that comes in from you, and from any other forum user who has the same problem.

I have a few questions. First, are you running the scanner as administrator? Second, do you have User Account Control (UAC) turned on/off? And lastly, have you updated Vista with all of the recent updates, ie. Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Framework .NET 3.5?!

Ok, try turning off UAC and rebooting. Then give the scanner a try. I have 64 bit and do not have issues with the scanner. You may also need to add Crucial.com as a safe site in your browser settings. But, go ahead and shut off UAC and try again. That program is so problematic. I'd say 70% of all the systems I fix, have registry issues caused by UAC being on and all the permissions not getting acknowledged fast enough.

just tried both with and without UAC, bsod throughout (vista4 enterprise connected to t1, vista64 home connected to cable modem, uac on/off, etc...).

Note on the browser "safe site": In the interest of expediency, l just downloaded crucialscan.exe to my downloads directory (as mentioned earlier) and the click it from there (and then wait for all the pcs to reboot)

Interesting that every vista64 (multiple at work, multiple at home, etc.) here bsods and none there do...

The scan is meant to downloaded and saved to your PC before you run it, that's the way it was designed, so you're certainly running it properly.

Do you have the same updates installed on both the Vista systems at work and home? More importantly, are they all the same versions of Vista? Are you running the scanner from a limited user account or from the Administrator account? If a limited account, are you running it as Administrator?

Just a day or so ago I ran the scanner on my home system to see if I could make it crash. It has Vista Home Premium, 64-bit, fully updated, and the scanner ran from the Administrator account. Not a hitch, and no sign of a crash.

Hi Kicker,

Not sure I follow your question "are they all the same version of Vista"; in messages 11 and 13 I list some separate ones that bsod: Vista Enterprise Edition 64 bit and Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

But they are each "Version 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001".

Are you referring to something else?

Thanks,

Chris
