------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an all new build from NewEgg parts purchased 2 weeks ago.

When I first got everything together I could not get both sticks to work. When trying I got BSOD at Windows startup.

I tried each stick and went with one that worked so I could get everything downloaded and updated.

Then I went back and tried both sticks, slots 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 in dual channel mode and everything I could think of, still no go. Would post and log into Windows but if I played any game i would BSOD or the computer would just shut down.

Then I tried each stick one by one in every slot of my mobo, alone to see if it would work. One stick will work in every slot by itself. The other stick will only work in slot 1 of my mobo.

My temperatures appear to be fine. My CPU and System rarely exceed 45 c and my video card, Saphuire ATI 4890, sits idle at 58-62c and hasnt exceeded 70c at load. I also have it all in an Antec 1200 case with its 6 fans on the middle setting.

memtest86 failed until I put the one stick into slot 1 with the other stick in 3.

My bios settings are 333 @ 9.5x for the CPU and 666 20 @ 1.8v manually for the RAM.

I am really at a loss. I get thigns to run but I randomly get BSOD or computer shutoff, like someoen unpluged the comp or hit he power button. I set the bios to shut off after holding the power button for 4 seconds. Every error I get and track down is a RAM error.

ANY help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Ballistix Tracer BSOD/Shut down problems

Hi Dejoblue,

Here are a few things for you to try to help resolve this issue:

1)Please ensure you have the latest BIOS revision installed. This can be downloaded from the system/motherboard manufactures website along with full instructions.

2) Test the modules again using Memtest but this time individually. If memtest is reporting errors, run the system at stock settings I.E Not overclocked

If possible set DRAM timings to SPD, this way the correct timings are applied to the module.

3) If memtest shows no errors the problem could be software related. If you are using Windows please ensure you have the latest updates and also motherboard, graphics card drivers are up to date.

If the size of physical memory has been increased, you may have to adjust the virtual memory, here’s how to do this;

1. Click on Start Settings -> Control Panel
2. Then click on System -> Advanced -> Performance -> Virtual Memory -> Change
3. Set the Initial size (MB) to the amount of physical memory you have, and Maximum size (MB) to twice this amount. For example if you have 2 x 256MB modules installed, Initial should be set to 512 and Maximum 1024.
4. Then click on Set -> OK -> OK
5. Then restart your computer.

Please let us know how you get on with this and we can advise further from there.

Re: Ballistix Tracer BSOD/Shut down problems

I have already done all of this, in some cases 3 times.

To clarify: Do I have to set my CPU host frequency to 444 to get the 666 20 timings?

I am using this in a dual channel configuration.

I currently have it clocked at 333 mghz x9.5 for the total of 3.16 Ghz that is STANDARD non overclocked 8500  processor.

DO I need to change the CPU host frequency to 667 mghz x 5 and set the timings to the SPD table of 999 24? At 1.5 volts no timings work, do I need to set it to 1.8volts as well?

Re: Ballistix Tracer BSOD/Shut down problems

I have set timings to 999 24 and 1.5 volts as per the SPD table. I cant configure a 444

Everythign else is bone stock.

333 x 9.5 for 3.16 STOCK Wolfdale E8500 Dual Core intel Proc.

1333 memory frequency @ 1.5 v

I will memtest86 this evening and let you know the results.

Less than an hour in I get an error from the game I am playing.

Re: Ballistix Tracer BSOD/Shut down problems

What OS are you using?! If you are using Vista 64, there are known memory issues with 32 bit applications, such as WOW and Battlefield 2. Vista uses memory differently than XP did, so you'll need to patch your game executables (.bin files). It's not the memory, but how Vista uses it. Google 'Vista 64 memory errors' and you should find a lot of posts about users who have had to edit the bin file to get the games to run properly in Vista. It has something to do with Windows "LargeAddressAware' functions. I have literally repaired dozens of systems to fix this issue with games such as WOW, Command and Conquer, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Crysis, Grid, and many others. You will need to have the free download: "Microsoft Visual Studios Express C++" to fix it. Much of the information on the web shows to use the 2005 version, but the 2008 version works perfectly too. I'd be glad to help you further if you need it.
