MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

Turn it on, and get Code d3

Looked it up here
Ram incompatibility.

I encountered it when I used Team Xtreem Dark 1600 2x 2gb DDR3s.

I am now running on Corsair DHX 1600 2x 2gb DDR3s with no issues.

D3 refers to the first pair of ram slots (black). D5 refers to second pair of ram slots (blue).

I suggest exchanging your rams for an older or more common model.
So I looked it up

Should be working.....

Now my set is older when it was 600USD for the 2GB 16000 kit. Do I need to RMA them? I don't have another DDR3 motherboard here, and I don't have anymore DDR3 memory ATM.

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

Could you give us a bit more information on your system set up to help with our trouble-shooting?  Firstly, have you always had this issue or has it only recently started?  What is the full part number on the modules and when did you purchase them?

*What BIOS revision/date is currently installed?
*What Processor do you have?
*What timings are applied in the BIOS? I.E CAS, RCD,RP,RAS?
*What voltage is applied in the BIOS?
*Have you tired the memory in another system?

Also, could you advise how the RAM slots look on the motherboard i.e. black, black, blue , blue or black, blue.....etc.  To ensure the correct slots are being used for dual channel.

Apologies for all the questions but the parts are suitable for your motherboard, so it may just be a set up issue which the above will help us determine.

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

I found out that with the GD70FX AM3 motherboard, you have to install slow memory first. Then download the 1.2 or higher bios, and flash it to the board before it will even boot with the memory. Most high speed ram does not seem to like the motherboard with 1.1bios.

Sorry I took so long to post back. I bought a 1GB stick of Crucial DDR3 1333Mhz from new and fixed my problem.

CPUAMD,  AM3 955

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

I am having issues with my memory also.

I currently have installed the Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3 1333MHz (2 x 2GB) 4GB kit. I have issues with my system hanging randomly. It will hang for 2-4 seconds and then release. I didn't have this issue until I got this memory. Can someone please advise? Below I will list my setup...

*What BIOS revision/date is currently installed? 1.3/4-27-09
*What Processor do you have? Phenom II X3 720 (stock)
*What timings are applied in the BIOS? I.E CAS, RCD,RP,RAS? Default timings, I believe they are showing 9-9-9-20. (This isn't default settings for the RAM, this is just what the BIOS finds. I have tried to setup the default timings manually, but the system will blue screen.)
*What voltage is applied in the BIOS? 1.8V
*Have you tired the memory in another system? No.

This happens when at stock settings and overclocked. I have tried a different video card just in case it was an issue with graphics since it was hanging... same results.

Thanks for your time,

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

How many slots do you have? If four, have you tried the memory paired up in both sets of slots? Have you tried installing just one and then booting? If so, what was your result? Most motherboard manufacturers are using two different types of memory slots these days. This to prevent problems with overloading the memory controller. Only their high-end elite boards have controllers that can support four sticks at once. The two types of slots are usually set up this way: the ones closest to the the CPU can run up to 1600 MHz, the ones farther away can run >1600 MHz. I would suggest referring to your motherboard manufacturer's forums to see if they have any details. Ultimately, those forums would be more informative on the specifics about your hardware. But, still try just one and see if it boots. If it does, then shut down, and switch it out with the other stick. Repeat this for all four slots. This will verify if your slots are functioning and if your RAM is functioning. <---- Always try the easy stuff first. You'll pull less hair out this way :smileyhappy: Next, if everything properly booted with a single stick, go ahead and use MemTest86+ to check your memory. If both sticks pass individually, then try again with both sticks inserted in one pair of slots, then the other pair of slots. Using Memtest allows us to narrow down the options to hardware issues as opposed to software/hardware issues as it tests outside of the Windows environment. If everything checks out, there may be software issues we need to look at. I'm hoping that whatever's causing this makes itself visible at one of the mechanical checks. It's much easier to troubleshoot mechanical than it is software. :smileywink: Let us know how things turn out and/or what you find.

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

I tried the memory paired in the other 2 DIMM slots... same results. I tried each stick alone... same results.

I have borrowed my friends Corsair memory that I will be trying tonight to see if it happens. He is going to try the Crucial in his system also. This will be the next step and best test for determining if the memory is bad, or just not compatible with this MSI motherboard I own.

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

Corsair works fine with my motherboard and the Crucial works fine in his motherboard. He is using a Gigabyte motherboard, where I am using a MSI.

So I am left with a decision. I can't return the Crucial memory to Newegg.com where I purchased it. So will Crucial buy the memory back from me since it isn't compatiable with the MSI motherboard, or do I just have to try and sell the memory on my own to someone that doesn't own a MSI AM3 motherboard?

My friend loves the Crucial in his system. He has had great results with it. The Corsair just isn't my favorite but he has offered to trade me, or he will sell his Corsair and buy my memory so I can get something different.

Anyone care to say what they think would be the best thing for me to do since the Crucial isn't working for me!! :smileysad:

What speed rating is the Corsair memory? Is it the same as yours?!

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

The Corsair is 1600 MHz where the Crucial is 1333 MHz. I have clocked them to the same speeds though and the results are still the same. The Crucial randomly pauses or hangs for 2-3 seconds where the Corsair doesn't. Any reason you ask?

Re: MSi GD70 D3 Memory Error Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-16000

Seems to not be the memory now. I am having the issue again with the Corsair. So now I am moving on to either the RAID controller, MB or CPU. Thanks for the replies back while I have been on here with this issue.
