just wondering if the side shields, i guess they are the leds, can be easily removed to allow liquid cooling devices to attach

The side shields are heatsinks and should not be removed. The LEDs on the top are fixed and should also not be removed. Removal of LEDs will damage the module and removing the heatsinks will most likely damage the module. What liquid cooling system are you thinking of using?!

i stood corrected when i read a little more about where the leds are. im just trying to take the side shield off. the coolant system im gonna use is http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/product_info.php?product_id=627   it gets up close and snug with the memory, so i can be sure its not going to cause damage

It's probably better to use the heatsinks in conjunction with your LCS. Some motherboards provide enough spacing that this option might be viable. I personally have never found memory to get so hot that a regular case cooling system or a memory cooler (like OCZs) could not bring it back down to nominal levels. I actually use the second choice and have never had heat issues with my Ballistix memory. I use an Omega meter/thermocouple to accurately test for heat issues inside the case and at every component. The memory has never been an issue, no matter how much I've OC'd it.

its pretty much just me building a new computer and wanting all the bells and whistles. ive never really had a heat problem with ram either. but the coolers for them state that it is probably a good idea to remove the factory heatsinks if possible. i am still not sure if i will do this. just in the research phase

It's probably better to get a fan system than that LCS unit. It will save you some $$ too.

In addition to all of lordgllynn's excellent advise, also keep in mind that if you modify the Ballistix modules in any way, including but not limited to removing heat sinks or LEDs, that will void your warranty.
