Asus UX302LG and M500 compatibility

My M500 is not detected by Windows 8.1 when installed in my Asus UX302LG. It works fine in other computers or in a USB enclosure.

The drive is detected in the BIOS, but diskpart in Windows 8.1 setup or recovery does detect the M500 at all. I have tried loading the latest Intel AHCI drivers in the windows setup but that does not help.

The M500 is listed as being compatible with the UX302LG (http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=UX302LG), so why doesn't it work?

I think I would try following steps:

- check SATA configuration in BIOS and set SATA mode to AHCI if possible

- check for BIOS updates

- check and note down BIOS settings and try to reset it to safe defaults

- did you do anything with M500 before this intallation, like creating partitions? If so removing all partitions from the drive can possibly help sometimes

- instead of the latest Intel RST AHCI driver try using the one listed on ASUS site - http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8.1/IRST/IRST_Intel_Win81_64_VER12801016.zip

Thanks bogdan, I tried all these but still no change :smileysad:

- BIOS is already in AHCI mode

- Already on latest BIOS

- The only setting I changed is to disable secure boot

- I have run clean using diskpart on another system, no effect.

- The linked drivers do not work either

I have never had to do that but:

- try the 1st step from this guide in order to open a Command Prompt at the begining of installation

- try the few first steps from this post

diskpart
DISKPART> list disk
DISKPART> select disk 0
(if the zero would be for your M500)

DISKPART> list partition
(just to ensure you have the correct disk listed and no partitions are found)
DISKPART> clean
DISKPART> exit

or alternatively all the steps from that post.

I have already tried cleaning the M500's partition tables using another system, but it has no effect.

The M500 simply does not appear in diskpart when installed in the UX302 so there is no way I can even clean it there.

I am sorry to read that. The only one idea left I have is related to the revision of installation media - as described in this thread. It seems the proper Windows 7 SP1 media is needed probably.

elladan, do you know the firmware revision of your drive? Is it MU02 or newer MU03? Is your M500 2.5-inch type?

Re: Asus UX302LG and M500 compatibility

It may be some very tricky drive-chipset-software interaction... I have installed Windows XP on M500 connected to older chipset with no issues. I would probably say it may have someting to do with storage driver being used during installation.

This is not much of an advice but if you are still going to try to install the drive in your Asus could you please describe exactly what drivers (versions) and how did you use them during installation? Using those drivers is not so complicated and it worked well for me in the past.

Re: Asus UX302LG and M500 compatibility

I have tried both the RST driver from asus website that you linked, and from intel's website (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23496&ProdId=2101&lang=eng&OSVersion...

I loaded it using the usual way, putting it on the usb drive and clicking load driver at the disk selection.

FYI, I have tested using another M500 with another UX302 and it also has the same problem. So it seems to be a compatibility issue either due to Asus or Crucial. Perhaps an official Crucial representative would like to look into this matter? Otherwise I will be returning the SSD and looking for another brand.
