Can I update the SSD firmware with an SSD that is connected externally?
The SSD itself cannot be connected via an external enclosure, dock, or cable, it has to be connected directly to the SATA port for the update process to complete.
This rules out buying any Crucial SSDs that I would use in external cases for my Macs. I've deleted Crucial items on my Amazin wish list.
As far as I am aware, all SSDs need to be connected to an internal controller and cannot be updated through an external interface except perhaps some eSATA connected SSDs. I too would welcome the ability to update an externally connected SSD. You have to keep in mind external devices have different controllers & interfaces that do not always allow or implement the passage of low level commands like those required for a firmare update to every connected drive. It would be nice if this could at least be done through a USB drive dock/cable.
