Cannot install Windows to M500 on a Dell Latitude e6500

I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 to a 240GB M500 on my Dell Latitude e6500. My machine can recognize the drive but I'm getting the error message:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.

(see image)

If I put my old hard drive into the laptop, I can read and write to the externally connected M500.

I'm at a loss. What should I try next?error-screenshot.jpg

You could probably try to check if there is a BIOS update for your laptop.

Thanks. That was the first thing I tried. I'm running the latest bios version (A27).

I can see A27 is dated 2012-05-15 but there is newer version A29 dated 2013-07-16.
