• Added margin to already-passing electromagnetic interference regulatory tests. Provides additional EMI margin for systems integrators.
• Improved performance with Link Power Management. Resolves performance pauses and hesitations with certain host systems.
• This is a recommended but not required firmware update. If the end user is experiencing pauses or hesitations in systems with Link Power Management ("LPM") enabled, then this update is highly recommended.

So no straight mention to the issues related with 2011 macbook pros.

Is it worth the update for users in this situation?!?!

It should solve the beachball issue on Macs presumably as us Windows users avoid that by disabling LPM (which shouldn't need to be done now?).

I dunno about any other 2011 issues.  I thought they were a cable shielding issue in the current Mac design?  Or have people changed their mind on that?

 I will give it a shot ASAP.

Only problem is that 2 hours ago my 512 m4 just locked up on my mbp and wouldn't boot for **bleep**!

Then I shoved it into an external enclosure and after a while managed to mount it and I am in the middle of cloning it to a regular HDD.

With some luck it will pass all the data to this spare HDD and I will try to rebuild the volume on the M4 and update the firmware.

Is it possible to update the firmware from a Mac by booting off the CD image?

Or do I have to do it from a PC?

Checkout the last line of my sig.  Even though you've got it going again, make sure to backup from now on.  It's hard to motivate yourself to do this until you've actually lost all your data once.  I include myself in that .  I worked in programming and technical support and ought to know better but I never bothered backing up until I lost everything several years ago!

If past CD's are anything to go by, they are ISO standard Linux boot CD's so should be fine.

Can the firmware be upgraded using a USB drive instead of burning a CD? I do have a Linux liveUSB which I can boot from and run the Linux binaries.

It's possible because lsdmeasasp normally repackages these as usb versions.  So if you know what you're doing in that regard then you should be able to do it.  If not then I'm sure him or someone will provide such an option in time.
