Crucial M4 SSD and the Ultra ATA CRC Error Count

[ Edited ]

I purchased this drive brand new, and did the required firmware upgrade at that time, many years ago

M4-CT128M4SSD2

firmware 0309

8700 hours

I'm using hard disk sentinel, and it shows the SSD as 98% health and 98% performance

BUT, the logfile shows

9/22/2017 6:17:14 AM,#199 Ultra ATA CRC Error Count 18094 -> 18082
9/22/2017 6:17:09 AM,#199 Ultra ATA CRC Error Count 18104 -> 18094

I moved this drive from an older PC, and I noticed a whole lot of these errors, 18104 ! and I cleared them by offsetting them in the smart data. BUT, they are now popping up again in the new PC

The new hardware is completely different computer, power, SATA cables, etc.

so, whats up with this error, I'm assuming it's having  hard time transferring data?

It normally indicates a cabling error.  So via a CRC check it was determined that the data that left the hard drive was not the same as that which reached the sata controller (or vice versa).  But from what you've detailed in your post it sounds like you're aware of this.

I don't have much to suggest other than try reseating the cables or maybe invest in shielded ones.

I don't think it'll cause any harm but just a performance dip as it'll be having to resend some data.

Since there are new cables and no more errors popping up, you should be good to go.

I see afirmware update 070H (04/02/2013) that addresses

"Resolved a power-up timing issue that could result in a drive hang, resulting in an inability to communicate with the host computer."

that looks like it might apply to my issue?

It doesn't sound relevant to me.  You haven't mentioned your drive hanging?  That's also an issue not believed to occur in the wild.  No harm in trying it though!
