Crucial V4 SSD S5FAMM25 Firmware available

[ Edited ]

Firmware revision 25 for the V4 SSD is now available. Please visit the following link to download this firmware update:

http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx

Release Date: 2/20/2013

Firmware for the Crucial v4 2.5" SSD is being updated from version 22 to 25

Version 25 includes the following changes:

  • Improved full disk performance.
  • Improved mixed mode performance.

Additional details can be found in the firmware guide

Installation of the latest firmware for the Crucial v4 SSD requires a USB flash drive as a bootable media and must be run from within Windows® 7 or Windows 8. The process of creating a bootable medium will erase any existing data on the USB flash drive, and due to the large number of in-depth improvement to the Crucial v4 drive, the firmware update will also erase all existing data on the SSD. We strongly recommend backing up your data before running the firmware update. We do not have an alternative update utility available at this time.

Note: The firmware update tool for Version 25 is not compatible with Mac® systems. If you are using your V4 in a Mac® system, please contact Customer Service for your region for assistance.

Please use this thread for feedback.

The firmware update erases whole SSD.

ok

i have windows 8 backing up to a 2TB drive. Does anyone have experience with doing a restore from windows 8. Would you feel comfortable with this process. ( I have pix and docs doubled backed up)

Posted this in the other thread, thought I'd post it here as well:

Signed up just to say that this update FINALLY fixed my slowdown/freezing problem. My PC boots in about 10 seconds, and I can start using it immediately after boot without any slowdowns. Copying files/downloading quickly/running multiple thing etc no longer causes everything to lock up. Finally feels like I'm using a SSD.

Cheers,

-Alex

PS: Benchmarks stayed more or less consistent, but this brought my windows experience index number up from 5.9 to 7.1.

Do I read this correctly? Release Date: 3/19/2012 => almost a year old!!

Other vendors are at version 030 and that still doesn't solve the freezing problem (see my post 218 on page 22). The reported changes in 025 seem totally unrelated to this maddening issue.Whose leg are they pulling with this 'update'?

Unofficial Crucial V4 Guide:

I've rewritten this post because I deem it necessary.

If you own a Crucial V4 SSD you will definitely require this guide.

Table of contents:

  • Manual S5FAMM25 firmware update instructions.
  • Filesystem independent benchmark of S5FAMM25 vs S5FAM030.
  • The only way to make this SSD fast.

  • Manual S5FAMM25 update instructions:

Had to manually create the USB bootable update disk because Crucial's automatic way didn't work. What I did:

  1. Follow this guide in its entirety - except for a small difference in Step 3.
  2. Once you get to Step 3 use the new Crucial V4 firmware files instead of the ones the guide wants you to use.
  3. Done!

If you don't know how to get the 'new Crucial V4 firmware files':

  1. Follow Crucial's own guide up to Step 5.
  2. The USB stick you performed Step 5 on will contain the required files.

  • Filesystem independent benchmark of S5FAMM25 vs S5FAM030:

  • S5FAMM25 fw for some reason reads as S5FAMM52:

025.png

  • Here's the unofficial S5FAM030 firmware that was released September 5, 2012:

030.png

I'm confused about the firmware being read S5FAMM52, but that's not significant.

Both firmwares are slow, but new S5FAMM25 seems more consistently slow - therefore more stable.

  • The only way to make this SSD fast:

Haven't been able to do the same for Windows. My Crucial V4 is as of now my Linux SSD.

  1. Install Ubuntu, or any other Linux distribution. It's allright as long as it's installed to an ext4 filesystem.
  2. After the slow installation, modify the file "/etc/fstab". Can be opened for editing by typing "sudo gedit /etc/fstab".
  3. Make the fstab file look like this - keeping your own UUID:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# / was on /dev/sdb6 during installation

# Commented out options, do not use: data=writeback # nobh

UUID=78a91c8c-80d1-429d-ac28-257b96fef22c / ext4 noatime,nodiratime,barrier=0,commit=180,errors=remount-ro 0 1

# swap was on /dev/sdb5 during installation
UUID=71400ae9-fb76-4c33-b2f7-74aa132ba397 none swap sw 0 0

# tmpfs - dynamically resizable ramdisk - everything here disappears after each reboot
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
tmpfs /var/tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
tmpfs /var/log tmpfs defaults 0 0

4. You now have a Crucial V4 with 200MB/s read/write speeds.

Explanation - The reason the Crucial V4 is slow is due to the fsync instruction. Meaning that - verifying that the SSD has performed a write takes a lot of time. Adding barrier=0 to the fstab relaxes the fsync strictness. and makes the operating system "trust the SSD" instead of continously asking it if it's done with the previous job.

EDIT1: Big thanks to CreeVal for providing a link to the unofficial S5FAM030 firmware that was posted 12-19-2012 10:18 PM.

EDIT2: Flashed from S5FAM030 to S5FAMM25 now, as Mr. bogdan suggested.

EDIT3: Cleanup and help people that can't update due to USB stick problems. I'd have added a refund guide if I could.

EDIT4: Guide to achieve a fast Crucial V4 under any Linux distro eg. Ubuntu.

Hi everyone,

There was a typing mistake in the original post and the release date was the the 19th of February 2013 and not 2012.

This is an official Crucial firmware update.  Please be aware that updating your V4 with any non official Crucial firmware updates can void your warranty.

So it has not been released yet? In most parts of the world it is now 21-02-2013 (or 02/21/2013 in north american date format) so 03/19/2013 is some time in the future.

Perhaps you might like to try again... I'd suggest you try 02/19/2013 next time. :smileyhappy:

No. I would suggest 2/20/2013 in order to be in line with information from firmware download page :smileyhappy:

Also, if we're talking windows experience benchmarks - the S5FAM030 firmware gives me 7.2 and the V4 is still freezing.

I am aware of the troubles you may have with your V4 but maybe you could give this official firmware a try in order to see if it would improve anything for you. I believe you can always go back to unofficial one since you have already done that before apparently.

Also did you try LPM registry fix? It seems it still works well for some systems.
