Crucial M4 256GB SSD: Read Error: Semaphore timeout period has expired. Request could not be performed because of I/O device error

Current Firmware version is: 000F - The version that was available at the time of purchase and installation - Mid 2012.

I was transferring some BIG MEDIA FILES from the SSD on X61T to an external USB HDD to make space and most files copied except FEW.

This error code was generated and logged. Is there a fix?

Is there a reason to be concerned about the drive?

Should I back it up and call for an RMA?

Is there a fix? Way to recover the data?

Okay. Now more of my files are not READABLE.

Can someone please tell me what I can do?

I would try to check SMART data of the drive, you could do that with CrystalDiskInfo tool. Also I think I woudl perform regular disk error chkdsk in order to see how operating system see the drive status.

CheckDisk - Ran yesterday - Tons of Read Errors in a Less than an year old SSD.

I am gonna check how many of these files are UNUSABLE and CORRUPTED NOW.

I think it calls for an RMA?

Any files that were affected by these problems were moved to a folder named "Found" on the device or disk. Your device or disk is now ready to use.

If you removed the device or disk before all files were fully written to it, parts of some files might still be missing. If so, go back to the source and recopy those files to your device or disk.

Re: M4 256G: Read Error: Semaphore timeout period expired. Request not performed due to I/O device e

A Semaphore is usually used to SHARE / COMMON resources or Memory Ranges or Common Access Data

If I remember correctly the last time I used it was for Assemblerd / C programming for Low Level Device Drivers.

My guess is that as the System waits to get the Data but the FAILED parts of SSD are not able to provide data it times out etc. due to Device Error.

Re: M4 256G: Read Error: Semaphore timeout period expired. Request not performed due to I/O device e

It doesn't look good to me, there was many logical errors and some bad clusters. Today I have run chkdks for the first time on my 7 months old M4 and it didn't find any errors at all.

SMART data doesn't look bad however still there are few errors there:

01  Raw Read Error Rate - 1
BB Reported Uncorrectable Errors - 15082
C3 Cumulative Corrected ECC - 11853
C7 Ultra DMA CRC Error Rate - 5

- Raw Read Error Rate - tracks the raw rate of media errors per megabyte of data over the SATA interface.

- Reported Uncorrectable Errors - this attribute tracks the number of uncorrectable (UNC) media errors {51h 10h,
51h 44h, 51h 01h} reported back to the host for all data access commands. Errors encountered by drive self test (DST) are NOT included.

- Cumulative Corrected ECC - tracks the count of total number of bits corrected by ECC over the life of the drive.

The interesting one is: Ultra DMA CRC Error Rate - it tracks the rate of CRC errors occurring in Ultra ATA transfers to or from the host. This may indicate some problems with data transfer between the host and the disk and as far as I know it is connection related rather than drive related error. I am wondering is it possible that you are encountering some _artificial_ errors caused by some kind of drive connection issue. You may want to take a look at this thread. I am not saying your drive is perfectly fine, I would just try to check is it realy failing or is there any other issue perhaps.

The tool is available in a zip and need no installation (only unzip and run).
It has an GUI to view the output of the smartmontools (also in the ZIP), the SMART data of the drive(s) .

In the original output (device information tab / button "view output") you can find the errors of the selected drive (if some occurred).
