M500 480GB Mac Late-2011 Very Slow Operation

[ Edited ]

I have just installed my drive as second drive in the system replacing an HDD that has worked just fine as a second drive in the DVD bay.  Partitioned the drive and able to copy things onto it but it copies very slow and 93GB copy onto it is listed at 35 days right now.  44MB took 30 minutes to copy.  Please help me with any advice you might have.  MacOS Extended - Journaled. Is this a bad drive do you think?

I have an M4 256GB in the main drive bay and it works just fine.

Which model Mac? Is it a MacBook Pro 13 inch, 15 inch or 17 inch?

I believe the 2011 models, particularly the 15" and 17" had problems with most if not all SATA-III drives in the DVD Bay.

In the 13 inch there were problems too - make sure you have all the SMC and EFI updates.

15 inch Late 2011. This is so disappointing. May have to see if Crucial is willing to take it back in return for 960gb instead and just have one drive. Other posts seem like a lot of work

Hi dodegaard,

I am sorry for the issues that you have been having with your drive. The drive would run much better in the main drive bay as alex486 had stated with the link posted. We do have a 45 day return policy on products purchased directly with us. If it was purchased through another vendor you would have to see what their return policy is, unfortunately. Please let us know if there is anything else we may be able to help you with.

Thank you.  Yes I think I will get it replaced.  I am not sure how you could do this but it would be exptremely helpful in the compatibility tool to somehow note this.  I take that tool seriously with making sure it will work.  I will work with Sales today to get an upgrade.

Brief question.....if I am going to upgrade my main drive and just stick with one (since I have an M4 in my other bay) is it simple to move my 256GB system image to a new 960GB M500 or am I looking at a rebuild? Advice welcome. Thanks.

Hi dodegarrd,

I appreciate your feedback about having the compatibility tool mention the requirements for the the Mac systems. I know it's something that we have been looking into doing.

If you are going to go to one drive it will be easy to transfer your data from one drive to another. We offer a laptop install kit that features a data transfer software that can be found here.  Let me know if there's anything else I may help you with.

Hi,

Having a MBP late-2011 15"  myself I kept looking for a solution to this problem. Not for the faint-hearted or while still under warranty, but there are solutions out there. See these places/brave people that invested on a resolution:

http://sites.google.com/site/themacbookproproject/

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1570602

If you go that way, pls leave a note afterwards!

Good luck,

EDIT:

Searching around,found this:

http://hardwrk.com/en/ssd-hdd-adapter-kit-for-macbook-pro.html

I have no clue/relation to this company. All I can say that in their blog pages, the (german) statements mention that Sata 3 was frequently not possible on MacBook Pros 15" and 17", early and late-2011 models, but with their adapter it would work since it was redesigned for this application:

http://hardwrk.com/blog/neuer-hardwrk-adapter-jetzt-voll-sata-3-kompatibel )

They also mention the shielding as proposed in one of the links above, but of course see their (expensive) solution as an easier to do for normal users. Still, there's quite a number of steps.
