That is unfortunate, it does seem like a hardware issue rather than just a simple software error.
Well, I'm next in the MBP/M500 barrel.
I just bought another M500 and will install it in my mid-2010 MBP this weekend.
I like to perform clones with the new drive (the M500 SSD) in an external Firewire enclosure, then clone using CCC from the old HDD that is still in the Mac. After the clone is finished I Boot the Mac from the FW enclosure with the SSD still in it - to check for problems.
I use Drive Genius to repair permissions and Defrag at that time. I realize it's said that SSD's don't need Defragging but I do it anyway.
Only after several Boots from the FW enclosure will I install the SSD in the the MBP.
I'll know more about the M500 and my MBP clone in a few days --- fingers crossed.
My procedure worked well with this 960GB M500 I'm using in my 2010 iMac now, and the SSD is on the second SATA port with a 3.5" HDD on the first SATA port.

Hi Robin,
Thanks for your replies and I'm sorry to hear that you are still having problems.
What we can safely see is that the drive is working as it's being detected externally and only seems to have issues inside the system. We have also checked our records and we have a very low return rate for these drives.
As you have tried different software to clone the drive and it's still not working then it could be something to do with the connection and the SSD. We are looking in to this further on our end and have not yet been able to replicate the same issues. I would be unable to confirm how long it will take for us to get a solution for this unfortunately.
All our products come with a 45 day return period, so if you ordered it from us directly we can arrange a refund for you. I would also recommend contacting Apple about this issue as I personally don't think it's a fault with the SSD.
Once again I'm sorry for the problems you have had and you can contact the customer service department for your country in my signature.

Hi guys, just thought I'd throw my hat in the ring - I am having EXACTLY the same problem outlined by the two previous posters. Booting from the SSD not a problem via USB, then when I install it internally the Mac's Startup Disk Manager fails to appear when holding down Option.
I am going to attempt to wipe the drive and recover from a Time Machine backup as suggested by picnic. Will keep you posted.
I am running a mid 2012 MBP 2.3GHz i7.
Thanks.

I have the exact same problem with my late 2011 13 inch macbook pro using the 480gb m500. I have an i5 2.4ghz processor and am running Mavericks. I have tried cloning the ssd using both carbon copy clonerand super duper. No matter what I do, I receive a white screen with a flashing question mark inside of a folder icon when attempting to boot from the ssd while it is installed internally in place of the HD. The ssd works fine booting from USB. I know this is getting repetitive but PLEASE HELP!

I am not a Mac user but the first thing I would do would be to check for EFI and SMC firmware updates. SSD firmware update would be not out of the question too.
Also I have noticed that many of you try to clone from internally connected HDD to externally connected SSD. Is it possible to do it the other way on Mac? I mean to clone externally connected HDD to internally connected SSD? I do not know Mac cloning software - is it possible it is trying to set up some OS related settings during cloning process? In that case I would try to run clonning process with SSD connected internally.

I haven't checked to see if there are any SMC firmware updates. I'll do that.
Since the ssd is not recognized while it is connected internally, I wouldn't be able to perform any tasks when attempting to boot the mac, including cloning data to/from the drives.

I just installed a M500 240GB MU03 in my mid-2010 Macbook Pro and I'm typing on it now.
My method today was to install it in an external FW 800 enclosure and initialize it, then load a new Mavericks OS on it.
I booted from this M500 while still in the ext enclosure and transfered my applications and networks settings.
Then I re-booted from the M500 a few times, ran Disk Genius utility to update permissions, etc.
The install in the MBP i5 was straightforward with the exception that I added the included width spacer.
It booted after a delay and I re-booted a few times to test.
I ran Blackmagic Speed Disk tests and it showed 260 Read/480 Write.
I've been using it all afternoon, Mavericks works fine, all the Applications I've tried so far do too.
The 960GB M500 in my 2010 iMac works slick too.
I wonder what the problem causing differences in this Thread are?

I started from scratch last night, erasing the m500 and then performing a fresh install of mavericks onto it via USB. I booted from the ssd via USB multiple times with no problem. I then replaced the internal HD with the m500 and it won't boot. I'm still getting a flashing question mark like there is no drive connected. Sadly I'm ready to return the m500.

Maybe the fact that I am doing the initializing using Firewire 800 has a bearing on this.
I do all the setup and prep from my mid-2010 iMac or the mid-2010 MBP and it's FW 800 connection, not USB.
