Meaning of "Percenatge Lifetime Used"

[ Edited ]

Hello

I have Crucial SSD disk, and i recently checked the disk with this tool and this is what is showed. Can someoen explain what does it mean? Should i be worried about it and better buy new one and copy/safe data?

//i have never used Defrag. tool on this disk, 16GB used

//my system spec if needed: http://dopice.sk/jrM

The NAND used in the drives has a rated number of times it can expect to be erased before failure.  The percentage lifetime used is the average number of erases per NAND as a percentage of that rating.  So when it reaches zero, it's theoretically reached the wear level the drive was expected to achieve.

In reality, it's not that accurate a way to gauge the drives health.  It's difficult to predict failure based purely on usage wear - it's just a guide.  It could last several times over that (and people have stress tested them several times over). It could fail sooner.  Think of a car engine expected to last 250,000 miles.  It's probably not that likely it's going to stop dead on 250,000.  It might break sooner, it might break later.

All you can really do in the case of any storage device is keep it backed up.

If it's a mission critical drive (though these are consumer rather than enterprise class drives so it probably shouldn't be!) then it would probably be wise to think about replacing it if it's worn.

Please note that we don't actually see what it showed because there is no screenshot or attachment in your post Smiley Wink

It would have been removed because it shows your serial number.  There's an option in Crystal to hide it.

I have to say I'm a little puzzled by that screenshot as to why it's highlighting that as a problem. The drive is only 6% worn, 94% remaining.  Crystal bug perhaps?  That's an old version - try a newer one.

Re: Meaning of "Percenatge Lifetime Used"

You don't have a problem there.  Crystal is wrong for some reason.

I guess it's thinking that this is 94% used?  When it's actually 94% remaining.

You can confirm this based on the average erase block count (attribute AD).  This has a raw value of BE in hex which is 190 in decimal.  190 is approximately 6% of the drives rated life of 3000 erases.
