New Crucial MX300 525GB - Reallocated Sector Count

Hi there,

Iam cruising over web but cant find proper answer - I have almost new drive for a system drive(approx. 3 months and 2.2TB written) and today I noticed reallocated sector count - 1, and reallocated event count - 1, in HDTune Pro utility with warning signs. Crucial's Storage executive software showing no problems - good health, and otherwise I have no problems with it.

Should I be worried and consider RMA, or its normal with SSD drives??

Thanks

We are having the same issue with 2TB version of disk. Brand new SSD reporting these statistics.

For details see host\'s SYSLOG.

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
No additional email messages about this problem will be sent.

Reallocated sector count and raw read error rate is pretty high for being a new disk.

I found more people reporting 16 reallocated sectors in brand new drive, still cant find if its reason to RMA, and if its affecting SSD drive lifetime/performance?

your drive reporting too high temps must be wrong value?

Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 76 to 75

Temp is difference from 100, not from 0 Smiley Happy

194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 073 063 000 Old_age Always - 27 (Min/Max 19/37)

Re: New Crucial MX300 525GB - Reallocated Sector Count

I don't have that drive model so I'm not sure if it's normal or not.  In the past some drives have had none zero default values on some values that were fixed in firmware updates.

if you need to speak to Crucial, you can contact their custoemr services via the link in my signature.

Definitely proper answer from Crucial support:

"

Thank you for your email. =

It is not uncommon for SSDs to show a number of bad sectors but that =
doesn't necessary point to a fault on the drive. You can find our details =
on why this can happen on our Knowledge Base page here:

http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/My-SSD-has-bad-sectors/ta-p/111486

If you are experiencing other problems with your SSD, please let us know =
more and we can look into it further for you."

Update at this:

Reallocated sectors increased to 9 and chkdsk reports some errors on next day,

eshop's support person suggested to RMA drive because of broken sectors, and warranty technician arranged immediate replacement, which is on the way now,

technician even mentioned that enabled sleep mode is seriously damaging SSD drives because of drive trying to write into single sector - ANYONE heard of that? cant find anything suitable about that.

also suggested to replace cable which could make troubles too.

anyway nice service. Thanks for answers.

Re: New Crucial MX300 525GB - Reallocated Sector Count

Even if the host computer tried to write to a single sector, the actual drive doesn't work that way.  What the host computer sees as the drive is basically virtual and doesn't represent how the data is actually stored.  The drive maintains a mapping (known as the Flash Translation Layer) between how it looks to the host and where the data is actually stored on the drive.  So the host computer will say 'write to this sector' and be led to believe that happened whilst the drive actually wrote to wherever was most appropriate from a performance and wear perspective and maintain a mapping between the two.  The drive will even move data about whilst it's idle (and update the mapping appropriately) so static data is moved to more worn sectors and where that data was can then be written to to even up the wear.

Re: New Crucial MX300 525GB - Reallocated Sector Count

So technician must be wrong, and the drive was probably failing..??
