chkdsk on 2.5" external ssd crucial mx100 512gb problems (WIN 10)

I have formatted the crucial drive , named it as M:, and want to check for errors. I used the properties check interface. It returns errors found. It tells me to close the window and repair drive. But nothing happens. Does the repair take place on re-boot, even on external drives? I tried to run the elevated command prompt, chkdsk m: /f, but I receive the following message:

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.14393]

(c) 2016 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Paul>chkdsk m: /f

The type of the file system is RAW.

CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

What is the meaning of this message and how can I repair the drive? Thanks for any suggestions...

Raw means it isn't formatted so it can't check it.

I wrote a brief reply to this, this morning due to a lack of time with a plan to add more detail this afternoon but it looks like the spam filter nuked the brief reply anyway!

What I mentioned this morning is RAW, mean it's not formatted and therefore there isn't a file system for chkdsk to check.

You say you've formatted it but Windows isn't seeing a formatted disk there.  So either:

you missed a step and initialised it without formatting afterwards

the drive contents were corrupted due to a drive fault

the drive contents were corrupted or simply aren't showing correctly due to a fault or compatbility issue with your external enclosure. A few people have had issues with certain enclosures.

the drive contents were corrupted by removing the drive without ejecting it
