slow read speed on MX300 525GB

I recently purchased a brand new Crucial MX300 525GB SSD and the read speeds are very far from what is advertised. Using multiple benchmarks I get read speeds of about 430 MB/s and write speeds of about 490 MB/s. The advertised read and write speeds for this exact SSD on Crucial's website is: "read speeds up to 530 MB/s and write speeds up to 510 MB/s". So my write speed is fine, but my read speeds are drastically slower than they should be. Am I able to get a RMA replacement due to this problem I am having? Thanks in advance.

Re: slow read speed on MX300 525GB

@jcancellier Thanks for contacting us today. The speeds you are seeing are relatively good. We would be happy to dig into this deeper and see if there is something cause it to run a bit slower than we would expect.  Please fill out the information below:

* 'CT' part number printed on your SSD label: CT525MX300SSD1
* Motherboard/System Make/Model:
* Motherboard/System BIOS Revision:
* SATA Speed: SATA 1 (1.5 Gb/s), SATA 2 (3.0 Gb/s), SATA 3 (6.0Gb/s)
* BIOS SATA mode (IDE/ AHCI/ RAID):
* What is the SSD being used for? (O/S, Storage, Page File, etc.)
* Operating System:

* Have you tried a different system?
* What version of firmware is printed on the bottom of the SSD?
* What firmware revision is currently installed, if updated from the firmware listed above? The latest revision of Firmware is located here - http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-ssd
* Describe the situation causing the issue (i.e. - software being used, is data corrupted, do you get a blue screen, etc.)
* Screen shots available?

For desktop systems -
* What color or number is the SATA port the drive cable is connected to?
* Have you tried a different port, and if you did, which one?
* Have you tried swapping out SATA cables?

For laptop systems -
* Do you have more than one bay for hard drives/SSDs and have you tried the different bay(s)?

If the drive is deemed faulty we would be happy to replace it for you. We just would hate to replace the drive now and have the replacement run the same because of a different limitation of your system.

Re: slow read speed on MX300 525GB

No matter what is advertised MX300 has unimpressive sequential read speeds.

I think this likely has to do with the controller seeing as other drives using the same controller also tend to have pretty low sequential read speeds.

Just check out reviews of other drives using Marvell 88SS1074 as a controller.

So around 450MB/s in real life is probably more realistic than anything over 500MB/s, or that's about what you get with SSD Read Speed Tester anyway.

Still, even excepting the sequential read speeds your drive does not perform very well however.

This is how my MX300 275GB performed when almost entirely full:

2016-11-01 23_53_32-CrystalDiskMark 5.1.2 Shizuku Edition x64 16GiB Drive filled to 88%-min.png

As you can see then despite my drive being smaller, as well as having far less free space and with a larger amount of data being written/read to/from it, it still outperforms yours in several areas.

This is not really my area of expertise but I think some AMD motherboards may give you lower speeds than some Intel motherboards.

Believe I read something about that anyway.

Also I think laptops don't tend to give great performance.

Maybe try testing another SSD in your desktop or configuring the power options for max performance to see if that may improve speeds.

Re: slow read speed on MX300 525GB

Thanks for the input. Yeah I actually have a Samsung 850 EVO on my laptop and I get well over 500 MB/s read speed. And I've tested that exact ssd on the desktop that is running the crucial ssd and have fast read speeds as well, so I suppose something may be wrong with the crucial drive itself

Re: slow read speed on MX300 525GB

Could you benchmark your drive with AS SSD Benchmark and post the results with 'Edit > Copy' option?

Also please post your SMART data. It may show some useful information. With CrystalDiskInfo use 'Edit > Copy' option, just please remove drive's serial number.

Re: slow read speed on MX300 525GB

It seems you are using generic MS AHCI driver that may result in lower benchmarks on your motherboard. Try using AMD AHCI/SATA driver provided by your mobo manufacturer.

The SMART data looks completely healthy to me.

These are the results after installing the amd ahci driver. Doesn't appear to have fixed the problem
