Mac Pro 2008 RAM Types?

Hey, I need an answer quick. I have a Mac Pro 2008 with a single quad-core Xeon @ 2.8GHz. I recently ordered this http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=F27D0DCDA5CA7304 RAM packagefrom Crucial. Will this work on my Mac Pro? I didn't realize until afterwords that it says 8-Core and that there's a 4-Core version of the RAM available here http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Mac%20Pro%20(4-core%20Xeon%205400%20Series)%202nd%...

So, will the 8-Core version work on my 4-Core version? I see that the model numbers are different. That's a bad sign.

Thanks a lot.

Re: Mac Pro 2008 RAM Types?

Hi unholymist,

Both sets of RAm that you've identified have the same specification, so these will be compatible with your 4-core version.  The different part numbers - the CT bit - are used to match the memory to the individual machine.  Both have this spec:

  • Package: Apple 240-pin FBDIMM
  • Feature: DDR2 PC2-6400
  • Specs: DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 72 •
  •

You should see no compatibility issues.

    Hope ths helps Smiley Happy

Re: Mac Pro 2008 RAM Types?

    Hi,

I'm sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, but I have an additional question.  I'm in unholymist's exact position.  I bought this: http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=18CCE4DBA5CA7304

For an Early 2008 Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.8GHz.

After installing it, I can only get a maximum of 8GB if I put the new RAM in slots 1 & 2.

If I put the original RAM in slots 1 & 2 I only get 2GB.

The problem is that the computer is ignoring the RAM in slots 3 & 4.

    What should I do?

    Thanks,

    Andy
