Cannot complete install of Windows 7 on M500 240GB

Performed clean install of XP SP3 on Dell Latitude E6410 laptop from Dell's reinstallation CD and installed Dell drivers.  Installed 120 updates from Microsoft Windows Update site.  All hardware works fine.  Proceeded to install Windows 7 Home Premium from boxed Family Pack  upgrade.  Everything proceeded normally until the very end when Windows 7 started.  Popup window says "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware."  Rollback to Windows XP worked fine.  I was successful at upgrading from XP to Windows 7 on a 120 GB Seagate Momentus 7200.2 using this same process.

This appears to be a partition alignment issue associated with the M500 being an Advanced Format Hard Disk Drive.  One Microsoft Forum post said the problem doesn't occur with Windows 7 SP1.  Unfortunately, the version of Windows 7 I have is earlier than SP1.

I'll try partitioning the M500 drive on a computer running Windows 7 SP1.

Connected M500 via USB enclosure to computer running Windows 7 SP1.  Partitioned M500 80002, 80002, and remainder.  Full formatted first partition and quick formatted the other two partitions.  Successfully installed Windows XP in second partition.  Attempted upgrade install of Windows 7 (not SP1) in first partition.  Install failed with original message - "Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware."

This is interesting:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848035%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2510009

But it implies that (i) if you can somehow slipstream KB982018 into your windows 7 media it should be o.k. with 512e media and (ii) Xp probably shouldn't work with 512e media (but it did in your case). Perhaps you need to contact Crucial directly and ask if the M500 is an Advanced Format storage device.

I tihnk you're on to something here.

Running the command shown in that article, the M500 shows as a 512e drive.

The C300 and M225 show as a normal 512 drive - I don't have an M4 to test but I presume it's 512.

From a 64GB M4 using linux parted print command:

# parted /dev/sda print | grep Sector
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B

I believe that an advanced format / 512e disk would show something like this:

Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B

Actually, I'm showing the following on my M500 240GB:

Bytes Per Sector: 512

Bytes Per Physical Sector: <Not Supported>

Bytes Per Cluster: 4096

Bytes Per FileRecord Segment: 1024

The <Not Supported> concerns me.  I've got the M500 connected to an external USB enclosure because I put my HD back in my Elitebook 6930p.  Had all kinds of strange behavior, even installing with a Win7 SP1 image.

Could be a USB thing? At least it works for that exact drive model for me on Windows 8.  What trouble did you have with Windows 7?  I ran it no problem for a couple of weeks beofre upgrading to 8.
