Re: Firmware 1916 feedback thread

I'm confused about why there are TWO firmwares for v1916. Which do I choose?

I'd guess at the one with Garbage Collection is better but why is there one without? Is that meant for non-Windows 7 users?

Intel Core i7-920 @ 3.6 GHz, ASUS P6T Deluxe v2209, 12 GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1,600 MHz RAM, 2 GB Point of View NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680, Creative X-FI Titanium HD, 256 GB Crucial M4 SSD + 2.5 TB HDDs, 2 x BD-ROM/DVD-Rewriters, Cooler Master Silent M850 PSU, Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64

Re: Firmware 1916 feedback thread

I'm still on 1819.  Can I do a straight upgrade, or do I need to downgrade to 1571 first?

Re: Firmware 1916 feedback thread

Garbage collection is mainly for RAID-0 users.  If you're running on Win 7 without RAID-0, then you probably want without garbage collection.

Re: Firmware 1916 feedback thread

Another question... with the v1819 firmware update, there was a different link depending on whether you had the 64, 128 or 256 MB model. Is there just one v1916 firmware for ALL drive sizes this time round?

Release notes? List of fixes? Can it be updated onto a live operating system or does disk need formating?

Thanks for the release, but more information on the firmware is vital.

@bogie - Yeah, I agree.

I'm going to leave this update for now until I have more information. I really don't understand this with/without Garbage Collection thing at all so I don't know which version I should be installing. I'm not using RAID0, my SSD is running in IDE mode like my other HDDs.

Thanks for releasing the firmware update but as stated above some release notes and more information on what risks this update carries such as data loss, etc., are needed.

Re: Firmware 1916 feedback thread

So who's going to be brave enough to install this new firmware first then?

Me, I'm going to wait for some feedback from others before I do the 'dirty deed'!!!

Re: Firmware 1916 feedback thread

Well, I've just taken a bootable backup of my Mac - so thought why not?  I have the previous CD's used to go to 1819 and a 1571 one handy too.

Installed the GC version, as Snow Leopard doesn't do TRIM - cannot do any harm as far as I can see...

Dowloaded the .iso, burnt it to CD and booted it.  A looong wait for a prompt and it updated the drive.  This is a MacBook Pro 5,1 up to date will 10.6.2 and all patches.

Well, it seemed to boot much quicker than of late.

On the 27th September 09 I had the following from XBench.

Uncached Read 838.78 155.64 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Disk Test 234.34

Sequential 188.95

Uncached Write 206.14 126.57 MB/sec [4K blocks]

Uncached Write 179.48 101.55 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Uncached Read 120.05 35.13 MB/sec [4K blocks]

Uncached Read 413.76 207.95 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Random 308.44

Uncached Write 120.62 12.77 MB/sec [4K blocks]

Uncached Write 326.87 104.64 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Uncached Read 2345.39 16.62 MB/sec [4K blocks]

Uncached Read 838.78 155.64 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Tests with the new FW give
Disk Test 257.78
Sequential 220.88
Uncached Write 234.19 143.79 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 298.14 168.69 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 124.33 36.38 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 409.45 205.79 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Random 309.49
Uncached Write 113.53 12.02 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 395.69 126.67 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 2580.22 18.28 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 832.33 154.44 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Be interesting to see what happens when the GC kicks in....
Oh, and I put the MacBook to sleep (closed lid, blinking light) whilst editing this post too.
So, at least for me, update was NON-destructive and things seem to be much like the feeling I had when I first put the drive on with 1571, before 1819 appeared and slowed everything down.
Happy bunny at the moment.
