OS on SSD?

Not having improvement after installing additional RAM, it was suggested to me that I purchase a SSD.  I am currently going through the Forums to learn about doing this properly.  There is a lot of valuable information here.

However, one question I've not been able to find an answer to is; do I need to purchase the OS (no disc, came preloaded on existing notebook), and how to get the OS onto the SSD?  If we're talking about cloning a drive, am I relegated to only having an external SSD?

Thanks!

Re: OS on SSD?

if you own a desktop, you can remove your HD from the laptop, hook both drives up to it and clone from one to the other.

If you only own a laptop with a single drive bay then you'll need something like this: http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CTLAPINSTALLAC

It will allow you to hook up the SSD via USB, clone to it and then you can swap the drives over so the SSD is internal
