Weird speed result on Crucial m500

[ Edited ]

Hello everyone,

I just bought myself my first SSD drive two days ago and I was not so impressed by the speed so I decided to test it. I got the below.

I tried different ports and with/without any other drive

installed. I'm on SATA2 but I can't see it being the problem.

It was the case before and after the firmware update.

I might add this is a fresh Windows 8 installation.

Any idea is appreciated

thanks

Carol

Not sure why the AS SSD screenshot doesn't  appear but here are the numbers (MB/s):

Unfortunately I cannot see the picture with the speeds that you posted but on SATA2 you will reach a maximum theoretical speed of 285/275MB/s. It will probably be less than this.

Keep in mind Sequential Read/Writes speeds will be a lot lower.

Pictures are moderated so usually we have to wait for them to appear.

Most probably transfer mode for this drive is set to IDE in BIOS. You should check if your BIOS support AHCI mode and change tranfer mode to AHCI. Before doing that you should enable proper driver in registry - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976

Hi

Thanks for the idea. I guess I will check in my bios when back home.

I understand that could explain why it says pciide - BAD

I stay confused on this though, I thought I read that the m500 has problem with AHCI mode and it was better to go IDE to have good results.

Yes, pciide - BAD indicates the drive is in IDE mode and that is BAD :smileytongue:

As for M500 and AHCI mode I didn't notice anything like that. For modern SSDs it is AHCI mode you want cos it will give you better performance.

You sure didn't read it around here. AHCI is vastly superior to IDE. :smileyhappy:

Yup, seems to have improved!

Although I was expecting my Acc Time to be lower and 4K to be higher a bit but I guess the latter is fine. Are those numbers still normal ?

I cannot find any benchmark with results anywhere close to my access time's :smileyindifferent:

I believe that technicaly it could be considered as normal. However now the 4K speeds went down. Please provide some more details about your system, motherboard/laptop exact model, is it Windows 8? I think AS SSD Benchmark indicating stock AHCI driver is in use (storahci?) so you could probably try to install different AHCI driver in order to see if that would make any difference - if it is Intel based system then I would probably try Intel RST driver (Rapid Storage Technology) either from Intel's or motherboard manufacturer's site.

Re: Weird speed result on Crucial m500

I have a GA-MA790XT-UD4P (SB750 chipset) and am running on Windows 8.1

I am using the stock drivers and I just tried to install the AMD one, it wouldn't detect the SATA controller, so I forced updated the stock driver and the result was worse, I had around 391 of score. I then rolled back to stock and noticed there is a BIOS beta firmware update for my board so I tried it.

Numbers seem much better this way. I think I should be satisfied with those, what do you think?
