m500 msata changing sector size

Hey,

is it possible to run the m500 msata 240gb on a sector size of 512b. I know that the physical sector size is 4096, but i think my ssd should run on the cluster size of 512. I tried this

Right click on it format...and so on

21.jpg

After that an error appears:"cluster size is to small"

I think its an error of the ssd. Do anyone think i should send it back and try a new one?

I have read few articles about that and it seems that from the SSDs performance and lifespan point of view it is the best to use default allocation unit size and I think that for modern SSDs Windows should choose 4096 bytes (4KB). I would suggest using 4KB.

However I don't know what is causing this error for you - I am able to format my M500 any way I want, MBR/GPT with allocation units 512 bytes - 64 KB (drive connected externally with USB enclosure).

Edit: Maybe it is some kind of interaction from Windows 8/8.1? Does it pretends to be smarter than user? :smileywink:

Open an cmd.exe as Administrator and run:

fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo <drive letter>

Can you format any other drive that returns:

Bytes pro Sektor :                  512
Bytes pro physischen Sektor :       4096

with 512 Byte Cluster Size?
