Hi there
we have 512mb ram currently on a Dell PC with a total capacity for 2GB. We have one spare slot. Do you recommend that we remove the 512MB and insert a 1GB, or keep the 512MB and install a 1GB(to yield total memory of 1.512GB) ?
Also which of the following should we chose to insert:
1. DDR PC2700, CL=2.5
2.DDR PC3200, CL=3
Will there be any additional set-up to be done once the new memory is installed, will the system immediately recognise the new memory or will we be required to perform system installation of software or any other updates ?
thanks in advance for your assistance.
Linda

Keep the 512MB and go for 1.5GB. You would only need to take the 512MB out if your system doesn't allow different sizes and most do these days. I would suggest you use the Crucial System Scanner or Product Finder to help you select the correct RAM. If it gives you a choice of 2700 or 3200 then go for the 3200 as that is faster and backwards compatible but be aware your system will only run as fast as the slowest memory module so if your existing 512MB module is 2700 it will only run at that.

I'd suggest you remove the old 512MB, and buy a 2x1GB kit, or a new matching 2x512MB kit if you can't afford the 2GB kit. This way you keep dual channel, and have all matching memory so you'll have less hassles.
As mentioned above, you should look up your exact Dell on the Crucial Scanner so you be sure to get compatible memory.
