What a coincidence. Just yesterday received delivery of an extra 512 MB memory card for my very slow IBM T30 ThinkPad that came with original 512 card 4-5 years ago and 1 empty slot. Crucial scan recommended this extra 512. My booting and slow operating problems started approx. 10 days ago after downloading a bunch of critical Microsoft security updates, etc. Which I tried reversing through a system restore to an earlier date. No luck so tried this RAM upgrade but system not recognizing the new 512 and also not working any better. Tried calling Crucial tech support but closed today. This doesn't look promising and assume I'll probably be returning for a refund. Likely need to purchase new laptop if no fix available.

DMASSETTI- I SUSPECT YOU HAVE A COMPLETLY DIFFERENT PROBLEM, more ram will not make your computer boot more quickly. Slow booting is primarily caused by crud ware (and some decent programs, any adobe program for instance) loading and immediately going out to the internet to look for updates, sending your social security number along with all your banking information to the Russian mafia, etc. There are several threads on this forum which explain how to speed up your "boot" process through use of selective startup and the msconfig program. That being said 512 is the minimum in my opinion to run XP, so your upgrade was a good idea, now you just have to get it to work. First I think I would try is re-seating the memory module and then reversing them so the old one is in the second slot, new one in the first slot. See what happens and let us know. You may be able to keep that t30 a bit longer after all.
