VAIO VGN-CR Series - different results from Crucial Tools

Hi all,

I would like to upgrade the RAM of my (little bit old) VAIO VGN-CR31S which now has 2 RAM modules of 1GB each one to new 2GBx2 modules. Crucial find tools suggest me two different RAM modules solutions:

Crucial advisory tool: 4GB kit (2GBx2) DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •   •  Part #: CT869327

Crucial System Scanner tool: 4GB kit (2GBx2) DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •   •  Part #: CT1003538   - based on scanning result of Intel PM965 chipset

My question is: which solution fit best with my computer?

If I understand correctly the maximum supported frequency for chipset PM965 is 667 Mhz; so the module PC2-6400 will also work with downclocked frequency (from 800 to 667 Mhz). If it is correct, which I should buy?

Just another question: as stated in the following details, my current modules are "2Rx8". Are Crucial suggested products compatible?

Current RAM Details:

Actual RAM configuration (data from CPU-Z):

Chipset Northbridge Intel PM965 rev. C0

Memory Type            DDR2
Memory Size            2 GBytes (2x1GB)
Channels            Dual, (Symmetric)
Max bandwidth        PC2-5300 (333 MHz)
Nominal Voltage        1.80 Volts

Opening the case on the back, the RAM modules has this label: 1GB 2Rx8 PC2-5300S - 555 - 12

Re: VAIO VGN-CR Series - different results from Crucial Tools

Hello Paso,

Thank you for contacting us today. Your system appears to be compatible with either the PC2-5300 or the PC2-6400. PC2-6400 is the faster of the two speeds and it does appear that your system has a front side bus speed of 800 mhz and would be able to utilize the full speed. If for some reason what I have been reading is incorrect, the system will clock down to the 533mhz with no issue. I would recommend going with CT1003538. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Best regards,

I finally bought the DDR2 PC2-6400 model (http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT2KIT25664AC800). Delivered on time (3 days) and it all works out.

Only one remark: as I expected, Windows Vista can manage only 3 of 4 GB of memory installed. Not a big issue for me, a plus of 1 GB makes the difference.

Thanks for your support!
