Current pending sector count on Crucial MX500 1TB SSD's

I'm having a strange issue on a CentOS 7.6 machine with 2 Crucial MX500 1TB's running in RAID1 (Linux software RAID). On reboot and every once in a while I get mails about current pending sectors on both drives (it is always 1 sector and the problem seems to correct itself). Also monitorix, a web based server monitoring app shows the problem in its graphs. That is I see non zero values every now and then for drive sda en sdb which are the Crucial SSD's.

 

Already tried updating to the latest firmware but the update program stated no updates were nescessary ... just got the drives so this could be the case.

Please post the SMART attributes of your MX500's.  You can use "smartctl" from the "smartmontools" package or you can use GSmartControl.  You may need to manually update the "drivedb.h" file to have the SMART attributes displayed properly.   Both of these apps can also show you the current firmware version on the SSDs.  The current version is M3CR023.

From your SMART logs, it does not appear that any blocks have been reallocated so I don't know why you would be seeing any Pending Sectors popping up.  I'm not familiar with monitorix.  Is it sending these messages or is it smartd or some other app?  Do you know if it is leveraging smartmontools to get the information or is it using its own tools to compute the values and analyze them?  Could there be a misconfiguration in the settings or scripts for the alerting & reporting?

 

Do you have other drives connected to this system?  Are these SSDs internal?  

 

You should update the "drivedb.h" file so the SMART attributes are properly labeled & computed.  The latest release of the "drivedb.h" file has proper support for the MX500.  Just make sure to download the one for v6.5 to match your version of smartmontools.  Once downloaded you need to manually replace your current file.  On Debian this file is located at "/var/lib/smartmontools/drivedb/drivedb.h", but it may be located elsewhere on CentOS.   Then run smartctl again on each drive using the "-x" option which will provide a few more details.  It wouldn't hurt to run the Long selftest on both drives (takes about 30 minutes to finish).

 

Make sure to omit the SSD serial#s from your post.

Monitorix doesn't provide its own tests and monitoring but relies an what the system and services provide, so yes plain smartmontools in this case. Also I get mails about current pending sectors (always 1 and always the new sda en sdb Crucial SSD's), AFAIK CentOS uses smartmontools for these mails. I have these drives and 4 traditional internal harddrives 2 8 TB drives and 2 4 TB drives, all without errors and all years old.

I'm going to guess the pending sector is a result of the huge amount of erases the drives are getting in such a short period. You've used up 2TB and 3TB on each drive's wear life, which in reality probably means you've erased around 10-100TB from each drive (wear leveling up to 10x effectiveness) in less than 100 hours of operation. This is an exceedingly high amount of wear for consumer class drives, and the controllers are likely backed up with erase requests.

Being consumer drives they're not designed to handle this sort of workload, you're also using software RAID which compounds the issue, because it's going to effectively produce far more wear than a hardware array would. The other issue with software is they can often product uneven wear across drives, one of your SSDs has 30% more erases than the other, which is not idea in an array.

I would suggest you perform a sanitize with our Storage Executive software on each drive clearing them of any pending erases, then setup your array with a proper RAID controller; the combination of the two would likely prevent the problem from happening in the future. Software RAID can cause lots of issues, it would never recommend it to anyone for any system setup because of the potential problems.

The large amounts of writes were mainly due to initial setup of the drives and data restore, I have however looked at preventing unnescesary writes and have since disabled some write intensive services and also set noatime mount option on the partitions on the Crucial SSD's. Writes are now about 30 to 50 GB a day, which still is significant but not as much as it was initially.

 

The problem persisted though, and it's always 1 pending sector for a short amount of time.

Have you ever actually seen the "Current Pending Sector" show a value of "1" or has it always been an alert.  Do your alerts take a report of the SMART Attributes at the time of sending the alert so you can see if the value is really changed?

 

Are you having any issues with the system other than getting these alerts?

 

Are you able to update smartmontools to a newer version in case there is a bug causing this issue?

 

Can you post the uncommented lines/settings for your smartd.conf file? Or any other related smartd configuration file?  Plus the file(s) which sends the alerts (make sure to cross-out/obscure any personal information like an e-mail address, ip address or server names, etc.).  Probably best to post in a code block to retain proper spacing.

 

How often do you get these alerts?  Do you ever get them when the SSDs are not being accessed?

 

Is it possible for you to keep this system offline overnight, but with the SSD RAID mounted for testing with another bootable Linux distro?  Of course you will want to configure smartd to report any issues during this test.  You might be able to use Knoppix for this, or you could install another Linux distro on an external USB drive (Ubuntu is probably best so you have a more current version of drivers & smartmontools).  Since this is a complex system, I would install Ubuntu to a USB drive using another system especially if ou have a UEFI system so the motherboard's UEFI boot menu does not get modified.  Many systems provide a hot key during POST to bring up a BIOS/UEFI boot menu.

 

If it actually comes down to an odd issue with the SSDs themselves, then Crucial_Benny's suggestion to perform a Secure Erase may be warranted or you could configure smartd to not send alerts when the "Current Pending Sector" attribute changes value assuming you are experiencing no other issues.

I've also got the same problem using two Crucual MX500 1TB SSD's in Linux Software Raid (Btrfs).
Though it's always the same disk, that shows the Current_Pending_Sector with value 1. The other drive doesn't seem to have this issue.

I'm using a newer version of smartctl (7.0 vs 6.5), so I doubt it's a bug within smartctl.
