MX500 firmware update - no official how-to from Crucial?

I have an MX500 SSD.

I am a Mac user (no Windoze computer in my home).

I don't have an optical drive (Macs haven't had that for YEARS).

I use my MX500 externally (it is not a bootable drive at the moment).

How do I update the firmware?

I'm not sure you will be able to update the externally connected SSD.  I did see one post here, which mentions it might be possible if connected using Thunderbolt.   You would need to use the manual Crucial firmware updater which can be downloaded from here.  Use Etcher to create bootable USB drive from the ISO file, then boot to it using Option Booting (it will be the orange icon which may be labeled "EFI").

Another option is to get access to a standard PC (or an older Mac) where the drive can be temporarily installed internally for the firmware update.   It can also be done externally if the PC has an eSATA port.    If you have an IT department where you work, you can try asking if they will update it for you or you can take it to a local computer shop.
