Re: acronis wont copy old HDD

It sounds like your original hard drive may be physically failing.     You can use the free app GSmartControl to check your drive.  I've never used the Windows version, but the Linux version is fine.  If it says the drive is failing, your best bet is to just install a fresh copy of Windows on your new SSD.   Then attach the old drive using a USB to SATA adapter and manually copy the files (or use a copy program that can skip past errors and log the files it could not copy).   If it does not show your drive as failing, then post a copy of the SMART Atrributes and we verify the status for you.

Note:  GSmartControl has two 64bit versions.  One which will install to your hard drive and a portable version that can run without a full installation.

Re: acronis wont copy old HDD

Well those SMART Attributes look good.  #187 is a bit odd, but that may be due to Acronis reporting it incorrectly since nothing else shows a problem and the Extended Self Test Passed.

Is it possible Windows is downloading/installing updates while you are trying to clone the drive?   Also make sure the power adapter is plugged in and working.   Maybe even turn off any power saving options such as putting system and drives to sleep until after the clone completes.

You can also try using Macrium Reflect to clone the drive.  It is free and was suggested by someone in another post.   I have no personal experience with it since I usually prefer to just reinstall Windows again and manually migrate data & settings.

Another option is to perform a full shutdown (if using Windows 10, you must press the Shift key as you select Shutdown) and clone the drive while booted from USB or CD with the cloning software so Windows won't interfere with the process.

Re: acronis wont copy old HDD

Try what @HWTech has suggested. Macrium Reflect is a very good tool, I have been using it with great results for a couple of years now.

Other than that - how are the drives connected to your system? Is the HDD connected internally in the notebook and the SSD connected via USB? Would you be able to connect both drives to other PC system with SATA cables? Personally I have mixed feelings about connecting some SSDs with USB cables/adapters. I believe that sometimes the power provided by USB ports may be not enough for SSD drive, especially during heavy writing activity. If your SSD is connected to USB 2.0 port then you should definitely try USB 3.0 port. But this may be insufficient anyway.

Re: acronis wont copy old HDD

I just went through this process with Crucial Acronis True Image 2018.  It got to a point where it was starting to get read errors on the HDD being replaced and threw errors with options.  I told it to "Ignore All" but it still got to where it would not proceed any further, even after going all night.  I found my best solution was to clean install Windows 10 to the SSD and copy over the files that I really needed -- which worked okay.
