MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

Hi,

I have the following mahine:
MacBook Pro (Late 2011)

2.5 GHz Intel Core i7

8GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM

17 inch screen

As you can see it has 8GB RAM. When I put the model in to the Crucia website it recommends a 16GB kit (2x8GB)

However, Apple say the max is 8GB (2x4GB)

I spoke with them and they said that id I put more than 8GB in it would cause "all sorts of problems"! as it would be taxing the processor too much…

I'm not massively technical on these things but I would really like to have more RAM as I'm working on some mammoth Photoshop files at the moment and a large Aperture library.

Seems odd that the only kit offered by Crucial is the 16GB one.

Anyone got any experience of this ram kit with this model of mac?
Thanks in advance,

Phil

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

Hi Phil,

I have had a look in to this system and I can understand your concern.

However we only recommend memory after testing it in a system and we can guarantee that this model works perfect with 16GB of memory installed.

We don't only sell 16GB kit's for this system we also sell 8GB kit's and other upgrade options.

If you click on the link HERE then select show all compatible modules it will show you all the available upgrades.

I can however guarantee that your system will support 16GB no problem at all.

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

Dear Junket,

I'd just like a tiny bit more clarification on this question as I'm about to purchase a 16GB kit for my Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro too. When you say it works perfectly, is the system actually able to access all 16GB, or do you simply mean that there aren't any outright problems caused by putting in more than the recommended maximum?

The 8GB limit stated by Apple that makes me concerned can be found on this page here:

Many thanks,

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

Hi Scott,

The system will see and use the full 16GB of memory.  Some Apple systems are listed as being able to support 8GB but through further testing we can confirm that it can support 16GB and it will see and use the full amount.

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

I have gone through 2 pairs of this upgrade RAM modules and neither have worked with my Macbook Pro early 2011 17".

Both installs have cause unstability and extreme slowness. Is this a common problem?

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

I am kinda in the same boat as: sciencefairjudg

I have went thru two different pairs of 16GB modules.  They both must be doing the same thing to my MacBook Pro: same crash.  I have had the laptop checked out by Apple (MacBook Pro 17" (Early 2011) 2.2 GHz, with the 4GB put back in and it passed all test.

But I mean, I seriously doubt, you stress test every Apple machine, or MacBook Pro for 6 months solid sitting on your lap for 6 hours a day working intensively. Just a thought.

It's just this freeze that I can't reproduce.  Doing ANYTHING.  My next step is to put in an SSD, to get reboots faster, and see if that fixes the problem (ie it's the HD).  And after 6 months if I get crashes frequently again, (right now it's about 4 times a month, managable), I am going to go down 8GB.  Then test that for 3-6 months.

I mean you could say put the 4GB back in and test that for 3-6 months but there's no way I am going that low without an SSD, no way.  I'll live with the crash and 16GB till then.

Laters...

oh and Apple wouldn't give me another one with out taking it in and abusing it, so I was like whatever, still under warranty too, thing is those GENIUSES, are far from it. FAR from it, more like Guineas, they suck!  I was just like whatever, I have been using apples/macs for 28 years and computers and those kids ugh, make wanna...

hehe bye

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

Hi rezwits,

First of all I'm sorry for the issues you have had with your system.  I have had a look at that exact model and I can confirm that we recommend 16GB of memory for the system.

I can also see that we have a very healthy sales history with this memory without many returns at all,  Can you confirm the exact part numbers of the memory you have ordered?

Did you order the memory direct from Crucial?  We sell memory designed specifically for Mac systems so it's always better to check the exact part numbers you have ordered.

Do you know if you have the most up to date EFI firmware for your MacBook Pro?

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

Yeah,

Its got the latest and greatest EFI, OS, etc.

If it's not the RAM it's going to be the Video Circuitry, ie GPU, Discrete and Intergrated, <or> Hard Drive.

My troubles don't sweat it...  I'll figure the problem out eventually.  I've done many system re-installs etc.

But yeah it's my problem.  Cause I am going to keep this 17" for every cause I love 1920x1200, for VNC-ing machines with 1080.  SO I will eventually get this all resolved in the next six months.  I've got other things I have to do tho in the meanwhile...

Thanks

Re: MacBook Pro Max RAM - 8GB or 16GB?

Hi 031croat,

Thanks for your message.

I have looked in to this model for you and the maximum memory this system can support is 8GB over two memory slots.  This means you're currently at the maximum memory for this system.  You can see the system listed on our website HERE

If you do have any other questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask and I would be more than happy to help.
