I purchased this SSD drive around 3 and half years ago. It was perfectly fine but a year later or so, it stopped responding. At that time, I was able to get it back by just leaving it plugged in for 20 mins and so, the procedure I came across in the internet. I have not been using it as my primary hard drive and just used it as a backup external hard drive and it was working fine. A couple of days ago, I wanted to access some files and it again stopped working and this time the 20-min procedure did not work. I checked some forums and then updated my firmware from 040H to 070H by using a flash drive and booting from it. It was successful but again it did not work. My computer does not recognize it but I can see it in my disk utility as unallocated unknown disk. I tried erasing it but it gave an error saying "Data error (cyclic redundancy check). After that, I came across with this thread, which is not solved, http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/m4-128GB-data-error-cyclic-redundancy-check/td-p/124664 and followed a couple of steps mentioned in there. I downloaded Parted Magic Live and get some information about my disk. I am not an expert on this so I do not understand if my drive is in good condition or not. I tried using different recovery software but no luck there either. Any idea how to solve this issue? Here is the report I got from Parted Magic Live: (in the second post)

With the exception of a heck of a lot of 'unexpected power loss' (unlike later models, the M4 does not have power loss protection so this is bad!) the SMART data looks fine.
How were you trying to erase it? Format? Parted Magic which you downloaded for the SMART info actually has a 'secure erase' feature which would effectively return the disk to a factory erased state using its own internal erase features. You said you had the drive connected externally though? I would thing this would only work via SATA so if you're using USB rather then eSATA then you'd probably need to hook the drive up internally to try this.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, first, I tried erasing when it was externally connected and I was able to see the drive. Now, I connected it internally but it does not show up in Parted Magic interface. I do not know what is going on with this hard drive. It does not show up anywhere except the disk utility and it only shows up as an unallocated unknown not initialized disk, which still gives the same "cyclic redundancy check" error. Some recovery software also can recognize as unkown disk and scannin with them finds no data in the disk. I do not know if they scan correctly.

I was about to backup my data from another Crucial m4 256GB I bought in 2012 with 000F firmware, navigating my data then the drive just disappeared. UNBELIEVABLE! And it seems that no one cares about this. The most unreliable piece of SSD in the history! Well, they know how to answer you when you write a critical comment in Amazon aren't they! I have another 512GB MX100 in my desktop computer, I guess I will backup everything and crush it before it does to itself!

I did not even know that there were firmware updates for these SSDs. They could have easily reached out to the vendors who sold these SSDs and they could have emailed us to do something about them. All I remember that I had to fix them a couple of years ago after spending many hours on my own. And why there is a 3 years warranty? Most of the vendors give lifetime warranty for memory cards and these SSDs no different than them.
Anyways, as I said, I could have updated them before it was too late but yeah, I was using them as backup hard drives and did not think this thoroughly. After seeing the first 512GB M4 was broken, I did not even check the internet. I just let it 20 or so minutes and was expecting that it would recover. After seeing that this was not happening, I checked and updated firmware etc. At that time, I thought I could just update my other 256GB M4 but before that, I had to backup. I hooked it up and was just navigating my data then it disappeared. I have to get it back because I have my research data in them. I am normally not that dumb and I am using some cloud services for my research data but this was an old study and I forgot to back them up properly.
I am suspicious that this might be a Windows 10 related issue since the firmware update they released was in 2013 and for Windows 8.
I emailed Crucial and tried to chat with them today (they say chat is open on Saturdays 8 am to 2 pm) but there was not a link for that. I will call them on Monday and hopefully, they could be recovered.
