MX100 SSD dog slow

Hi everyone

I really hope someone can help me here.

I installed a 128GB MX100 SSD into my Lenovo X201 laptop a few months ago, but since day one it's performance has been very disappointing and slower than the hard drive it replaced.  For example, when waking up out of hibernation, the SSD takes 45 seconds to get to the Windows 7 desktop, whereas the old hard drive it replaced took 10-15 seconds.

Can anyone tell me what the problem might be as it's really starting to annoy me now.

There aren't any firmware updates available for this SSD, so I can't try that :-(

I've just run Crystal Disk Mark and the results are below:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2 x64 (C) 2007-2013 hiyohiyo

  Date : 2015/02/27 11:11:59
    OS : Windows 7 Professional SP1 [6.1 Build 7601] (x64)

Many thanks

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

It looks like at atom netbook to me?  They are built for all out power and cost saving and have very poor performance.  Those benchmark speeds, whilst poor, are about the same as my atom netbook and are massively bottlenecked by the chipset.

They're way faster than a HDD though.  Did you increase RAM as well? Hibernate time is proportional to the amount of RAM you have.

Personally, I'm gonna throw mine in the bin in a few months and get an Ultrabook.  I'm fed up of their lack of performance!

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

No it's a Lenovo Thinkpad X201, a powerhouse laptop aimed at the business user and has a Intel Core i5 with 6GB RAM. With the original hard drive it was one of the fastest (maybe even the fastest) computers I'd ever used.

Not so with this SSD though.

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

Ah, google let me down on a model search then!  You don't appear to have AHCI which is highly unusual for a modern performance laptop? Is it a BIOS option?  Don't enable it yet if so as there's a Windows tweak you'd need to do first.

Aside from AHCI, try these tweaks to swap some power saving for some performance:

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

Post a benchmark from this too please: http://alex-is.de/PHP/fusion/downloads.php?download_id=9

It's aimed at SSD's unlike CrystalMark and will post useful info like whether your drivew is misaligned.  That might explain your unusual speeds (they aren't at a sata limit for some reason!).

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

Hi

AHCI's a BIOS option and it's always been set to On - the only other option is Compatibility but this results in a BSOD with the SSD.

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

What driver version is iaStor?  There's something wrong somewhere if that's meant to have AHCI on!  Your 4k 64thrd results ought to be an order of magnitude faster than that.

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

I've never heard of iaStor but am assuming it's a drive interface controller or something similar.   I've just had a poke around Device Manager and it's showing "Intel 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller", and the driver version is 11.2.0.1006 if that helps.

Re: MX100 SSD dog slow

Sorry, I meant the driver that AS SSD is showing in what you pasted. Smiley Happy

11.2 is right and that version should be fine.

I'm at a loss with this one tbh!  It's a new one on me.  Did you try those earlier chipset performance tweaks for Intel based laptops?  They are valid for newer ones than the thread titles suggest.
