True. But as far as I could have seen it is Windows 8/8.1 (not OPAL drives themselves) that can silently enabled the eDrive functionality and switch your drive to eDrive/OPAL mode which is disabling the security feature set on these drives, like described here or here.
It seems the only way to re-enable security feature set (like secure erase or ATA password functionality) is to proceed with PSID Revert (I believe the other term for this is Revert SP Method) but the real issue is that Crucial does not provide a tool for that, at least for the moment.
I do not track the firmware releases for the other SSDs (other producer) you are refering to but if they provide a tool that lets you allow eDrive to be enabled (or not) by the user that is a nice feature indeed, built-in in firmware perhaps?
By the way - it seems that PSID revert tool for the other drive you are refering to has been already released to the public.
