For more details on bogdan's tip... I have two identical Mac Book Pros. The one with the failed old drive that I was upgrating with this SSD *did NOT have* the latest firmware according to this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 (just dowload it and run the firmware-installer to be sure). And, the Crucial M500 would not format there either. My other mac already had the latest firmware. So I installed the new SSD hardware there and partitioned without problems. So, I believe the firmware was the difference. Note: Mac firmware can't update if you're running off any external boot-able drive. So, if you hit this issue after putting the SSD in the laptop bay, you may have to pull it out again and 1) Install some HD that already works or easy to put a basic Mac install on. 2) Update firmware 3) Switch it out for the Crucial SSD 4) Then erase/partition/install OS on your new drive.

New M500 960GB arrived. Intstalled hardware in Mac Book Pro (2009) with 10.6.8. --Mac OS X Installer CD doesn't display any choices for destination-drive to install to. --Disk Utility won't "erase" the drive ("Disk Erase Failed... Disk Erase failed with the error: File system formatter failed") --Disk Utility won't "Partition" the drive ("Partition failed... Partition failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Input/output error.") --Went to firmware-update page for Crucial, http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx "Choose a product" doesn't have a choice for m500 SSD's. Stuck!!!!
